Minister of Rural Rehabilitation and Development Mohammad Ehsan Zia of Afghanistan paid an informal visit to NATO on 2 June. The visit was part of a European tour that will also include his participation in the Provincial Reconstruction Team Conference in Maastricht (3-4 June 2009).

During his visit to NATO, Minister Zia met informally with permanent representatives of the Alliance. The aim of the visit was to update NATO officials and Ambassadors on the Ministry's achievements in the field of reconstruction and development, especially through the National Solidarity Programme (NSP).

The National Solidarity Programme is the primary vehicle used to build social capital by promoting good local governance thereby empowering rural communities to take control over their lives and livelihoods.

More information on the activities of the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development can be found on the Ministry's official website (http://www.mrrd.gov.af)
