NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer paid his farewell visit to Italy on May 27th and 28th.

He held discussions with President Napolitano, Prime Minister Berlusconi, Foreign Minister Frattini and Defence Minister La Russa.  The Italian leadership assured the Secretary General of Italy's continued commitment to all NATO's operations and missions.  Afghanistan, Kosovo, Russia and the new Strategic Concept were the main issues on the agenda.  

President Napolitano also awarded the Secretary General the decoration of "Cavaliere di Gran Croce dell'Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana".

Mr de Hoop Scheffer also visited the NATO Defense College where he delivered a speech.
