General Ashfaq Kiyani, Pakistani Chief of Army Staff, visited NATO Headquarters for meetings with NATO's civilian and military leadership.

The NATO Secretary General, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and General Kiyani discussed two main issues:  first, how to deepen the relationship between the Alliance and Pakistan, including with regard to training of Pakistani officers in NATO Schools and the Afghanistan-Pakistan Border Coordination Centres; and second, the current situation in Pakistan, where General Kiyani outlined ongoing operations in Swat.  The Secretary General listened with interest to General Kiyani's briefing, but stressed that NATO's mandate and operations end at the border.

General Kiyani also met with the Military Committee, chaired by Admiral Giampaolo Di Paola.
