The Government of Hungary hosted an international conference, “Ten Years in NATO: A Decade of Security”, on 12 March 2009 in the Upper Chamber of the Hungarian Parliament. The conference commemorates the anniversary of the accession of Hungary to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in 1999, along with Poland and the Czech Republic.

Some 350 participants attended the event, including foreign and Hungarian dignitaries who played an important role in Hungary’s accession process, as well as Ambassadors, representatives of security policy institutions, and students.

Keynote addresses were delivered by NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and Ferenc Gyurcsány, Prime Minister of Hungary.

The occasion was also marked by a national NATO quiz and a series of lectures at universities around Hungary. In addition, Hungarian embassies held conferences and other commemorative events.
