On 16 February 2009, the NATO Public Diplomacy Division organized a visit to NATO Headquarters of distinguished members of the Foreign Affairs Committees of the Jordanian Parliament and Senate.

The delegation, which was headed by H.E. Dr. Marouf Bakhit, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Senate and former Prime Minister of Jordan, met among other NATO officials with the Secretary General Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, with the Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy Mr. Jean-François Bureau, with the Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Operations H.E. Amb. Maurits Jochems.

Topics discussed included the Alliance’s transformation and current political issues, NATO’s cooperative activities with Jordan under the Mediterranean Dialogue, NATO’s operations and NATO’s fight against terrorism.

The delegation also met with Mr. Pablo Zaldívar Miquelarena, Deputy Permanent Representative of Spain on the North Atlantic Council, to discuss the role of Spain as NATO’s contact point embassy for Jordan.
