On 27 January 2009 the NATO Deputy Secretary General Ambassador Claudio Bisogniero paid an official visit to Kuwait, in the framework of the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative.

During the visit the Deputy Secretary General held bilateral talks with His Highness Sheikh Nasser Mohammed Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah, the Prime Minister of the State of Kuwait; H.E. Sheikh Dr. Mohammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Kuwait; and with H.E. Sheikh Thamer Ali Al-Sabah.

During a speech delivered at the Kuwait Diplomatic Institute the Deputy Secretary General of NATO said: “Kuwait was the first Gulf country to join the ICI, followed later by Qatar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates. And we have been very pleased to see Kuwait making excellent use of the ICI process.” and also remarked: “My talks with Kuwaiti officials here today have once again underlined their determination in taking our relationship further. And we very much welcome that, and can assure you of NATO’s commitment in that direction”.
