The NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer addressed today in Valencia (Spain) the 54th annual session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.

He devoted his speech to NATO's enlargement, relations with Russia, Afghanistan, the Alliance's military transformation and the need to respond to new security threats.

"These are key areas where NATO needs to re-align its agenda with the changing realities", de Hoop Scheffer stressed.

On the sidelines of the session, the Secretary General met with the Spanish Deputy Prime Minister, Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega, as well as with the Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili.

De Hoop Scheffer also discussed partnership related issues with Kanat Saudabayev, Secretary of State of the Republic of Kazakhastan.
