The President of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia¹, Mr. Branko Crvenkovski, visited the NATO Headquarters on Thursday, 2 October 2008 and met with the Secretary General, Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer.

In their discussions, the Secretary General said that the Alliance recognises the hard work in defence reform and the commitment  to NATO's values and operations demonstrated by the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia1.

He reiterated that an invitation to Alliance membership will be extended as soon as a mutually acceptable solution to the name issue has been reached. He also said that  NATO will continue assisting the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia1 with the reform process it has committed itself to, until it ultimately joins the Alliance.
