NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, at the United Nations General Assembly, met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to discuss a range of international security issues.

They welcomed the Security Council's extension of the mandate for the ISAF mission, and agreed on the need for stronger international engagement in support of the Afghan Government, which itself must step up its efforts to reform.

They also discussed Kosovo, welcoming the excellent cooperation between the UN and NATO. Finally, both Secretaries General agreed on the value of a stronger institutional relationship between NATO and the United Nations.

During his visit, the NATO Secretary General will also hold consultations with several heads of state and government, as well as with ministers and heads of other international organizations.
