The North Atlantic Council held the inaugural session of the NATO-Georgia Commission (NGC) on 15 September. The NGC was formally established with the signature of the framework document by the NATO Secretary General and Georgian Prime Minister Vladimer Gurgenidze.

As a body in which all NATO Allies and Georgia will be represented, the creation of the NGC follows a decision by NATO Foreign Ministers on 19 August.

The NATO-Georgia Commission provides an important additional framework of cooperation between NATO and Georgia.  The  main goals of the NGC are to deepen political dialogue between NATO and Georgia and to supervise the process set in hand at Bucharest in view of Georgia's membership aspirations.

The NGC also aims to deepen NATO's cooperation with Georgia in its reform efforts and coordinate the Alliance's assistance to Georgia, in recovering from the recent conflict.
