The Prime Minister of Iceland, Mr. Geir H. Haarde, met with NATO Secretary General Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer at NATO Headquarters on 26 February 2008.
The discussion focused on NATO’s programme to support Iceland’s airborne surveillance and interception capabilities and other specific problems related to the High North. The final part of the discussion was devoted to the NATO Summit in Bucharest.
On the topic of airborne surveillance and interception capabilities, the Prime Minister said that Iceland is “very pleased with the fact that several NATO countries have expressed their interest and willingness in contributing to this programme, starting with the French this year.” This new programme was initiated at the end of 2007 as a consequence of the American redeployment of forces from Iceland.
The NATO Secretary General reaffirmed that NATO will continue to ensure the continuity of the airborne surveillance and interception programme in Iceland. He also commended the Prime Minister on the very important contribution Iceland is making for the ISAF operation Afghanistan.
