The Prime Minister of Albania Sali Berisha visited the NATO Headquarters and met with the Secretary General and the North Atlantic Council in order to discuss Albania’s progress report within the Membership Action Plan.

All Allies agreed that Albania has made progress in implementing political, economic and military reforms, but that more needs to be accomplished.

NATO Allies said that the main focus must include sustained efforts to ensure that reforms become irreversible. Decisions in the run up to the Bucharest Summit have not been taken yet and Albania should not diminish its efforts to implement essential reform.

Allies also noted the strong public support in Albania of the Government’s bid to join NATO and welcomed Albania's valuable contributions to NATO operations.

Albania is one of three countries in the Membership Action Plan, a NATO programme of advice, assistance and practical support tailored to the individual needs of countries wishing to join the Alliance.
