NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer met with Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maris Riekstins. They discussed the preparations for the Bucharest Summit, including the progress being made by the Balkan countries aspiring to NATO membership.

They also discussed the security situations in both Afghanistan and Kosovo, including the implications of a possible Kosovar declaration of independence. In this respect, both agreed on the need to keep the NATO-led Kosovo Force (KFOR) at current manning levels to ensure a safe and secure environment during this sensitive period.
