On 24 January 2008, the NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer paid his first official visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

During the visit, Secretary General held bilateral meetings in Abu Dhabi with the Prime Minister, Vice-President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

He also met the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, H.H. Gen. Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the Chief of Staff of the UAE Armed Forces, Lt.Gen. Hamad Mohammed Thani Al Rumaithi.

The Secretary General delivered a public diplomacy lecture at the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research in Abu Dhabi.

The talks covered NATO-UAE cooperation in the framework of the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative.
