NATO Secretary General, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, met with the President of Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf at the Conrad Hotel in Brussels on 21 January.
President Musharraf and Secretary General de Hoop Scheffer discussed the security situation in the region, noting that both Afghanistan and Pakistan face the same challenge of violent extremism and terrorism. They agreed that both countries, and NATO, should continue to cooperate as closely as possible to tackle this shared challenge.
President Musharraf confirmed to the Secretary General his intention to ensure that the upcoming elections in Pakistan will be free and fair, and both agreed on the importance of deepening the practical and political relationship between NATO and Pakistan.
