The NATO Secretary General, Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, visited Bucharest on 11 January 2008. He met with President Traian Băsescu, Prime Minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu and Defence Minister Teodor Melescanu.

The Secretary General discussed the substance of issues on the NATO Summit agenda. Some of the topics included: NATO enlargement, Afghanistan, Kosovo, the Balkan region more broadly and relations with Russia.

He also delivered a speech at the Central University Library and toured the faculties for the upcoming Summit, assessing the state of preparations.

“Clearly, the Romanian hosts have preparations well in hand,” the NATO Secretary General said. “The Summit—the largest in NATO's history—will run smoothly.”

The NATO Summit meeting will be held in Bucharest, Romania from 2 to 4 April 2008. In addition to the meeting of Heads of State and Government, there will also be an expanded meeting on Afghanistan with non-NATO ISAF contributing nations, a meeting of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council and of the NATO-Ukraine Commission.

The Summit will be chaired by the Secretary General of NATO, Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and hosted by President Băsescu.
