NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer visited Tokyo from 12 to 14 December and met with the Prime Minister of Japan Yasuo Fukuda.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Fukuda and the Secretary General reaffirmed that Japan and NATO share common values, as well as a mutual sense of responsibility towards global security challenges.

The Prime Minister and the NATO Secretary General reiterated their determination to continue co-operation in meeting these challenges.

During his visit to Japan as a guest of the Japanese Foreign Ministry, the Secretary General had meetings with the Minister for Foreign Affairs Masahiko Koumura and the Minister of Defence Shigeru Ishiba.

Finally, the Secretary General also met business leaders and members of the Japanese Parliament.
