On 12 November 2007, a group of representatives of the Lower and Upper Houses of the Afghan National Assembly visited NATO Headquarters.
This visit, organised by NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division, occurred a few days after the tragic suicide attack in the north-eastern province of Baghlan, which claimed the lives of numerous Afghan civilians, including Members of Parliament.
Afghan Members of Parliament constitute a key target-audience for the public diplomacy efforts in support of the ongoing stabilisation process in Afghanistan. This year alone, three Afghan parliamentary delegations paid a visit to NATO Headquarters.
The participants engaged in a comprehensive range of discussions on a variety of themes, including strengthening Afghan-international cooperation and renewing efforts to reinforce the link existing amongst security, good governance, the rule of law, reconstruction, and economic development. Views were exchanged to this effect with several NATO civil and military officials, including the Secretary General.
The visit reemphasized the importance of bolstering Afghan capabilities for the promotion of sustainable security in Afghanistan. It also stressed the need to maintain multilateral cooperation as a means of preserving the momentum necessary to build the parameters for long-term stability in Afghanistan.
