On October 4, NATO Secretary General, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer visited Georgia. He met with President Mr. Mikheil Saakashvili.

Their talks centred around Georgia's reforms, in the context of the Intensified Dialogue between NATO and Georgia. The Secretary General congratulated Georgia on progress in reform, but noted that further work was necessary, including in judiciary reform. He also noted that there should be a continued progress in democratic reform, with an eye to the 2008 elections.

The Secretary General also gave a public speech at the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and visited the city of Sighnaghi in the Kakheti region.
