The NATO Secretary General, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, visited Berlin on 13 September to discuss with German officials NATO's operations, as well as the upcoming Alliance Summit in Bucharest.

He met with Chancellor Angela Merkel, Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Defence Minister Franz Josef Jung.

They discussed issues to be addressed at the Summit related to NATO's transformation and enlargement.

The Secretary General praised Germany's significant contributions to NATO's missions in Afghanistan and in Kosovo.

In the evening, the Secretary General participated in a panel discussion on Afghanistan  with German parliamentarians organised by the local NGO Atlantische Initiative.
