NATO experts assist Kuwait in radiological protection planning

At the request of the Kuwaiti authorities, a team of NATO experts visited Kuwait on 6 and 7 May to assist in the review of the country's national radiation protection programme.
As part of NATO's Istanbul Cooperation Initiative Work Programme, the team contributed to a Radiological Protection Workshop sponsored by the Kuwaiti authorities, under the direction of Sheik Thamer Ali Al Sabah, Vice President of the Kuwaiti National Security Bureau.
The aim of the workshop was to revise Kuwait’s national radiation protection program and to seek NATO's advice.
The experts advised on best practices for the civil emergency planning aspects of this challenge, and exchanged views on some of the political and technical issues.
A key issue
The subject of radiation risks is a key issue for contingency planning, and the workshop reflected the importance the Kuwaiti authorities attach to this theme.
The Kuwaiti authorities expressed interest in subsequent practical cooperation on related issues and underscored the importance of the NATO visit and ongoing cooperation, saying that it was part of Kuwait’s strong bilateral relations with the Alliance.
"NATO extends its sincere appreciation to Kuwait for the excellent preparatory work and substantive programme, and looks forward to subsequent cooperation work with Kuwait," said Ted Whiteside, Head of NATO's Weapons of Mass Destruction Centre.
