Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt, met with the Secretary General of NATO, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, on 5 March at NATO Headquarters.

It was the first ever visit of an Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs to NATO HQ.

The Secretary General and the Foreign Minister discussed the regional security situation, and the way forward in the practical cooperation between NATO and Egypt.

The visit took place in the context of the enhancement of the political dimension of the Mediterranean Dialogue decided at the June 2004 Istanbul Summit, which includes regular high level political consultations between NATO and Mediterranean Dialogue partners.
