The Secretary General of NATO Jaap de Hoop Scheffer on 31 January held bilateral talks with the Defence Minister of Israel Amir Peretz.

It was the first ever visit of a Minister of Defence of Israel to the NATO Headquarters.

The meeting took place in the context of the enhancement of the political dimension of the Mediterranean Dialogue decided at the June 2004 Istanbul Summit, comprising the possibility of political consultations meetings between NATO and Mediterranean Dialogue partners at ministerial level.

In this context, on 9 February NATO Defence Ministers will meet for the second time with their counterparts from Mediterranean Dialogue countries in Seville, Spain.

During the meeting at NATO Headquarters Minister Peretz confirmed that he will be attending the Seville meeting.
