NATO chief calls for “a new NATO-EU chapter”

Speaking in Berlin, NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said the 21st-century security landscape demands a new quality in NATO-EU relations.
The Secretary General travelled to Berlin to address a Conference on European Security and Defence Policy organised by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Four key areas
“Strategic partnership between NATO and the EU has never been more important than it is today,” he said in his address.
“The challenges of our times demand a comprehensive approach to security, in which military and civil means are employed together and in a coordinated way.”
In his speech, the Secretary General outlined four instances in which the European Union and NATO can implement a real strategic dialogue – Kosovo’s final status, Afghanistan, military capabilities and political dialogue.
During his visit, the Secretary General also met with German Minister of Foreign Affairs, Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
Germany currently holds the rotating six-month Presidency of the European Union.
