During the meeting of the North Atlantic Council, 10 January, the NATO Secretary General presented Mr. Edgars Rinkevics, Latvian State Secretary, with the NATO Meritorious Service Medal.

Mr. Rinkevics was the Director of the Latvian NATO Summit Task Force responsible for the organization of the NATO Summit held in Riga in November 2006.

Mr. De Hoop Scheffer praised Mr. Rinkevics for his "personal dedication, insight and keen sense of judgement" that helped him to make "an outstanding contribution to the success of our Summit."
