NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer visited Bucharest on Thursday, 16 November, as part of the continuing preparations for the Riga Summit.

The Secretary General praised Romania’s contribution to the Alliance, particularly its readiness to provide operational reserve forces to support NATO-led ISAF forces in southern Afghanistan.

During his visit, he met with President Traian Basescu, Foreign Minister Affairs Mihai-Ra(zvan Ungureanu and Defence Minister Sorin Frunza(verde.

Discussions focused on the key issues on the Summit agenda, including NATO’s operations, transformation, relations with Partner countries and energy security.

The Summit meeting of Heads of State and Government will be held on 28 and 29 November, in Riga, the capital of Latvia.
