NATO’s Afghanistan mission and the upcoming Alliance Summit in Riga, Latvia, were the focus of a visit by NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer to Vilnius, 10 November.

Mr. De Hoop Scheffer met President Valdas Adamkus, Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas, Foreign Minister Petras Vaitiekūnas and Defence Minister Juozas Olekas.

The discussions focused on the political preparations for the Riga Summit on 28 and 29 November.

The Secretary General thanked Lithuania for its leadership of the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Chaghcharan, eastern Afghanistan.

Mr. De Hoop Scheffer also confirmed that NATO’s policing of Lithuanian air space will be continued.
