Hungarian Revolution commemorated at NATO

A special exhibition marking the 50th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution was opened at NATO Headquarters on 25 October.
The opening of the exhibition was addressed by Mr. Imre Mécs, one of the participants of the Revolution, as well as the Hungarian Ambassador to NATO, Zoltán Martinusz, and NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer.
Commitment to freedom
Mr. De Hoop Scheffer said the exhibition was an opportunity to remember the victims and to celebrate Hungary’s freedom today.
“The 50th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution is an ideal occasion to rejoice at Hungary’s hard-earned freedom – but also to remind ourselves that such freedom cannot be taken for granted,” stressed Mr. De Hoop Scheffer.
“In today’s uncertain world, the NATO Alliance is committed to safe-guarding our liberty, our security and our common values.”
Earlier, on 23 October - the day the Revolution began - the Secretary General travelled to Budapest to take part in the 50th anniversary ceremonies.
