On 18 October three schools in the Gelan District of Ghazni Province re-opened yesterday having closed their doors over a year ago because of security concerns.

Local elders, mullahs, Afghan Security Chiefs, and ISAF officials attended ceremonies at each school and reassured officials that security would remain a top priority. Large numbers of teachers and children were present at each ceremony in the villages of Agha Jan, Azad and Latif.

After the ceremony at Agha Jan village, ISAF troops presented backpacks, soccer balls and volleyballs to over 525 children, and teachers received 30 teaching kits. At Azad and Latif villages, soccer balls were presented to over 225 students, as well as 12 teaching kits and ten desks with the promise of more to come.

Afghan National Police Chief Allah Nazar assured school officials that he would conduct regular patrols in the area to ensure the safety of the school.
