From 25 to 29 September, students representing all 26 NATO countries are meeting in Portorož, Slovenia, to debate key issues on the Alliance’s agenda.

Having completed a three month online-tutorial, some 50 students will now practice, in a simulation seminar, NATO decision-making by tackling the issues that NATO Defence Ministers will deal with when they meet in Portorož, 28-30 September.

The results of the simulation will be presented to and discussed with NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and the Slovenian Minister of Defence Karl Erjavec on Thursday, 28 September.

Real-life issues: Afghanistan, NRF

The discussions will include Alliance operations and particularly Afghanistan, including  the expansion of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) to cover the whole of Afghanistan.

Experts from NATO and NATO delegations will brief the participants on these issues ahead of their simulation.

The agenda will also include the challenges of  NATO transformation and issues concerning the use of the NATO Response Force in operations.

The event is a cooperation with the NATO Public Diplomacy Division, the Munich European Forum, and International Association of Political Science Students.
