A tribute was paid on 11 September 2006 to all victims of terrorist attacks at a commemorative ceremony which took place at NATO Headquarters.
NATO and national flags were lowered to half mast and a minute of silence was observed throughout the Headquarters.
The Secretary General of NATO, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, also thanked the thousands of men and women from Allied and Partner countries who have served and are serving in NATO operations.
“The challenge of terrorism is global,” he said, “This is why we are in Afghanistan – the cradle of 9/11. And this is why we patrol the waters of the Mediterranean to the skies over the Hindu Kush, and why NATO is conducting operations to enhance our security.”
