Inferno threat in exercise scenario

As part of an exercise scenario, elements of the NATO Response Force have been called on to help evacuate residents of Cape Verde Island Fogo as its volcano threatens to erupt.
The 3,000 metre-high volcano dominates the island, whose name actually means “fire”. Over 900 residents remain stranded in the face of disaster.
As sophisticated monitoring equipment points to an imminent “eruption”, Evert Somer, a civil emergency expert from NATO is on Fogo, and will be providing a daily audio diary of the rescue effort.
Fortunately for the residents, unlike in 1951 and 1995, this volcanic activity is not real, but just another part of the scenario for NATO exercise Steadfast Jaguar 2006.
Ready for many missions
The exercise is a major test of the ability of NATO’s Response Force to undertake a wide range of missions when and where necessary, including responding to disasters.
