NATO has deployed four additional F16 aircraft to Afghanistan, significantly enhancing the air power of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

NATO has deployed four additional F16 aircraftto Afghanistan, significantly enhancing the air power of the NATO-ledInternational Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

The Belgian fighters, from the 1st Squadron based at Florennes Airbase, arrived at Kabul International Airport on 12 July.

They will reinforce the four Dutch F-16s currently in service with ISAF, and perform a wide range of tasks.

Support for elections

Their presence will also contribute to increasing security ahead of thelandmark parliamentary and provincial elections scheduled inAfghanistan for 18 September.

NATO will assist Afghan authoritiesin providing security for the elections. This will include thedeployment of an additional three battalions to Afghanistan, as well asa quick reaction force and an ‘over-the-horizon’ force.
