ANATO-sponsored conference is being organised by the Geneva Centre forSecurity Policy to discuss possibilities to improve civil-militaryrelations through new strategies and practices. The event, which willtake place from 6 to 8 July in Geneva, will bring together senior NATOcivilian and military staff with representatives of internationalorganisations and non-governmental organisations (NGOs)active in thehumanitarian and development fields.

Throughpresentations and panel discussions, the almost 100 participants willlook at lessons learned from the experience of civil-militarycooperation with NATO, particularly in the Balkans and Afghanistan. Keyissues that will be examined are the need for concerted planning, thepotential for developing principles and guidelines on best practices, and the implications for cooperation at the strategic, operational andtactical levels. This upcoming conference represents a follow-up to aseminar for NGOs that was organised in Brussels in November 2004. Itunderpins the Atlantic Alliance's commitment to consolidate mutuallybeneficial partnerships between civil and military actors in theconflict prevention and crisis management fields.
