Addressingclose to 300 Parliamentarians from 40 NATO and partner countries on 31May, NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer called on thelegislators to support the Alliance’s transformation.
Mr. De Hoop Scheffer was addressing the Spring Session of the NATOParliamentary Assembly, held in Lubljana, Slovenia from 27 to 31 May.
TheNATO Parliamentary Assembly is an inter-parliamentary organisation oflegislators from the member countries of the North Atlantic Alliance aswell as 13 associate members. Its principal objective is to fostermutual understanding among Alliance parliamentarians of the keysecurity challenges facing the transatlantic partnership.
“Youunderstand better than most other people why the Alliance must tacklemodern security challenges at their source, even well beyond ourtraditional area of operations,” he said in his address, “I count on your support.”
The Session focused on key NATO topics, ranging from a potential NATOrole in the Middle East to training military forces to fight terrorism.A highlight was an interactive exercise called “Black Dawn”, whichsimulated the potentially catastrophic consequences of nuclearterrorism.
During his visit to Lubljana, the Secretaryalso met for talks with the President of Slovenia, Dr Janez Drnovsek,the President of the National Assembly, Mr. France Cukjati and thePrime Minister, Mr. Janez Jansa.
In addition, the Secretary General addressed students at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Ljubljana.
