A special event held at NATO Headquarters on 13 April commemorated the 25 th anniversary of the death of Manlio Brosio, the Secretary General of NATO between 1964 and 1971.
A special event held at NATO Headquarters on 13 April commemorated the25 th anniversary of the death of Manlio Brosio, the Secretary Generalof NATO between 1964 and 1971.
It included a specialphoto display and a video presentation of Mr. Brosio’s term in office,the challenges he faced and his legacy as a ‘Cold Warconsensus-builder’.
The current Secretary General ofNATO, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, Professor Francesco Perfettiof the Italian Foreign Ministry archives and Italian Defence MinisterAntonio Martino paid tribute to the former Secretary General inspeeches at the event.
"Thereis ... probably no greater tribute that can be paid to a NATO SecretaryGeneral than to describe him as a consensus-builder," said Mr. De Hoop Scheffer, " ManlioBrosio, who had earlier been his country’s Ambassador in Moscow,London, Washington and Paris, was the supreme diplomat and had masteredthe art of consensus building . Indeed, no less an authority thanHarlan Cleveland, US Ambassador to NATO for part of the Brosio era,credited Manlio Brosio with providing the necessary “politicalingredient” for finding consensus on even the most difficult issues."
