The Secretary General of NATO, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, made a working visit to London on February 2-3, as a month of high-level diplomatic activity for NATO begins.

He met with Prime Minister Blair, Foreign Secretary Straw and Defence Secretary Hoon. They discussed preparations for the upcoming Foreign Minsters meeting with US Secretary of State Rice in Brussels on 9 February, the informal NATO Defence Ministers meeting on 9-10 February, and the Summit with President Bush on 22 February. Their discussions also addressed the key political issues on NATO's agenda, including Iraq, Afghanistan, the Balkans, and the outreach to the Broader Middle East.

The Secretary General also delivered a speech on international security to a group of international students at Cambridge University.
