Ministers of Defence from the 26 NATO countries are meeting in Poiana Brasov, Romania, on 13 and 14 October for informal talks on the Alliance's operational capabilities and missions.

Informal meetings traditionally have no fixed agenda and no formal decisions are taken; they are important in that they allow Ministers to discuss freely key issues on the Alliance's agenda.

Transformation, operations, NATO-Russia

At this meeting, Ministers are expected to focus on ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening NATO's ability to take on missions where and when necessary.

Specifically, they are expected to discuss ideas for further improving decision-making and the way operations are financed. Another important subject will be achieving the political targets for the deployability of NATO forces agreed to by NATO Heads of State and Government at the Istanbul Summit this June.

The future of NATO's current operations is also likely to be discussed, including further expanding NATO's presence in Afghanistan, ensuring security for the upcoming elections in Kosovo and implementing the Alliance's training assistance to Iraq.

An informal meeting of the NATO-Russia Council at the level of Defence Ministers will also be held.

This will be the first meeting of NATO Ministers to be held on the territory of one of the seven countries that joined the Alliance this year.
