The NATO-Russia Council (NRC) met in extraordinary session for the the first time in more than two years of operation to discuss the recent wave of terrorist attacks in the Russian Federation.

Ambassadors were united in their strong condemnation of the bombing of two civilian aircraft near Tula and Volgograd, the suicide bombing outside a crowded Moscow metro station, and the hostage-taking and subsequent murder of hundreds of innocent civilians, primarily school children, in North Ossetia. They extended their sincere condolences to the families of the many victims of these attacks and expressed their solidarity with the people of the Russian Federation.

Emphasising that there is no cause which can justify such brutal and barbaric acts, Ambassadors declared their determination to strengthen and intensify common efforts to fight the scourge of terrorism, including through the development as a matter of priority of an Action Plan to coordinate practical cooperation under the NRC.

A strongly worded statement was issued after the meeting.
