The five-nation Eurocorps took command of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan (ISAF) for the next six months in a ceremony held in Kabul on 9 August.
After six months of leading the mission, Canadian Army Lt. Gen. Rick Hillier, handed over command of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) to the French Army Lt. Gen. Jean-Louis Py, the Commander of Eurocorps, during a short ceremony, August 9, 2004.
The ceremony was witnessed by H.E. Hikmet Cetin, the NATO Senior Civilian Representative, and presided over by General Gerhard W Back, Commander of Joint Force Command Brunssum.
They both underlined the fact that ISAF V has performed superbly under challenging circumstances. ISAF VI will maintain the moment to accomplish the mission by working together with the Afghan Transitional Authority, the coalition and UNAMA, for free and fair Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
"Together, building on the solid foundation established by ISAF V, in cooperation with the transitioning democratically elected government, we can make a difference," concluded Lieutenant General Py.
Eurocorps whose headquarters is based in Strasbourg, France, is a multinational unit made up of detachments from five framework nations: Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg and Spain.
