The most pressing issues confronting governments and business in the new international security landscape were addressed at the NATO Forum on Business and Security, 30 June to 2 July, in Istanbul, Turkey.
Concerns in areas such as information security, transportation and border security, energy security and procurement in the new security environment were raised and examined in a series of workshops and plenary sessions.
The Forum was addressed by senior figures from NATO, its member and partner governments, and security solutions providers from the commercial sector.
The meeting opened with an address from Jean Fournet, NATO’s Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy, who explained the results of NATO’s Istanbul Summit and the transformation process NATO is undergoing. He reiterated the Alliance’s desire to promote cooperation with different organisations by being a catalyst for initiatives that would drive this objective. He also stressed NATO’s commitment to the principles of information sharing and cross-sector co-operation, which are central to the Business and Security initiative.
Other speakers included The Hon. Clark Kent Ervin, Inspector General of the US Department of Homeland Security, Stephen Schmerbeck, Director of Interpol’s Specialised Crime Office, Mr Ahmet Guler, from the Turkish European Business Association and Major General John Holmes, who led Project Unicorn, the collaboration between U.K. business and London’s Metropolitan Police to strengthen emergency response. Private sector participants were also present and included Lt. General Kemal Yilmaz, Chairman of Havelsan, and representatives from Sharp, Hewlett Packard, Thales, Havelsan, SAP, EADS, and Boeing.
The NATO Forum on Business and Security was sponsored by NATO’s Security Through Science programme to promote cross-sector cooperation in meeting the challenges of the new international security environment. The Istanbul Forum followed a meeting held in Berlin in February of this year.
