NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer congratulated the two new Allies on their membership in NATO during a visit to their capitals, 13-14 May, for talks that focused on the Istanbul Summit agenda.
This was the first visit by the Secretary General to the two countries after their accession to NATO and part of his ongoing round of visits to NATO and partner countries.
Just a few weeks before NATO Heads of States and Government meet in Istanbul, 28 and 29 June, the Secretary General's meetings focused on the issues on the Summit agenda: NATO's partnerships, missions and military transformation.
One of the main issues discussed was NATO's involvement in Afghanistan. The Secretary General underscored the importance of NATO succeeding in Afghanistan. He thanked the two countries for their contribution to NATO's efforts in the country, before as partners and now as members.
