The President of Bulgaria, Georgi Parvanov, discussed his country's accession to NATO, its reform efforts and its contribution to Alliance operations with Secretary General de Hoop Scheffer at NATO on 11 February.

Bulgaria is one seven countries, which are currently in the final stages of the accession process to join NATO, and are expected to so this year.

The Secretary General and President Parvanov discussed the progress of defence reform in Bulgaria, and key issues on the Alliance's agenda. This included NATO's operations in Afghanistan and the Balkans, and Bulgaria's contribution to these operations. They also exchanged views on issues that will be discussed at the upcoming Summit meeting of NATO Head of State and Government in Istanbul.
