From 10 to 13 January, NATO-led peacekeepers in Bosnia and Herzegovina conducted a short notice operation in Pale to search for indicted war criminal Radovan Karadzic and others.

SFOR received information that Karadzic could be staying in Pale late on Friday evening, 10 January. Troops were deployed overnight to search his house and were subsequently joined by local security forces, who assisted in the search.

Mr. Karadzic was not apprehended, but one person suspected of providing support to indicted war criminals was detained for investigation.

In a subsequent search of other premises, material with potential intelligence value was secured and is currently being examined.

SFOR authorities emphasized that this was the first operation of such scale conducted together with local authorities and described their assistance as “a step in the right direction”.
