On 4 August, Portugal sent to NATO’s Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre (EADRCC) an urgent request for aircraft and helicopters to help fight forest fires raging in the country.

In accordance with its procedures, the EADRCC contacted NATO and partner countries regarding the assistance requested by Portugal.

The EADRCC will coordinate any offers from countries and will relay such offers to Portugal.

The Centre will also continue to maintain contact with authorities in Portugal as well as in NATO and partner countries regarding any other possible assistance that might be required.

Established in 1998, the EADRCC is designed as a regional coordination mechanism, supporting cooperation between NATO and its 27 partner countries in disaster response coordination in the Euro-Atlantic area.
