NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson traveled to Rome on 4 July to hold consultations with Italy's leaders at the outset of the Italian Presidency of the European Union.

The Secretary General met with Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, Minister of Defence Antonio Martino, and the Chairmen of the Foreign Affairs and Defence Committees of the Chamber of Deputies, Gustavo Selva and Luigi Ramponi.

In his meetings, Lord Robertson discussed EU-NATO cooperation, the fight against terrorism and NATO’s taking on of new missions in Afghanistan and in support of NATO member Poland in Iraq.

Lord Robertson also received the award “Knight of the Grand Cross and Order of Merit”, one of Italy’s highest honours, from the President, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi. during a ceremony at the Palazzo del Quirinale.
