The President of Moldova, Vladimir Voronin, visited NATO Headquarters on 23 June for talks with NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson on strengthening cooperation.

The President of Moldova, Vladimir Voronin, visited NATO Headquarters on 23 June for talks with NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson on strengthening cooperation.

Moldova became a NATO partner country in 1994. Since then, NATO and Moldova have engaged in a number of joint projects. These included the safe destruction of the country’s stockpile of 12,000 landmines and 700 tonnes of surplus munitions and rocket fuel.

Lord Robertson and President Voronin discussed Moldova's relationship with NATO, security issues in the region, the situation in Transdniestria and the consolidation of Moldova’s territorial integrity.

Speaking at a joint press conference following their meeting, the Secretary General congratulated the President on the successful conduct of the recent local elections and progress made in the area of constitutional reform.

Lord Robertson also said the President assured him that Russian military equipment currently based in Moldova is being withdrawn in line with commitments agreed to at the OSCE Summit in Istanbul in 1999.

This was the second visit by President Voronin to NATO Headquarters, following a visit in June 2001.
