On Monday 26 May, the Secretary General of NATO, Lord Robertson sent a personal message to Spanish Prime Minister Aznar asking him to convey his deepest sympathy to the families of the victims of the plane crash which took the lives of 62 Spanish peacekeepers.
In his message, the Secretary General underlined the importance of the contribution made by the peacekeepers to international peace and security. During his visit to Spain on 29 May, the Secretary General also expressed his solidarity with the people of Spain as well as with Spanish authorities at this difficult time. The Secretary General also offered his condoleances to the families of the Ukrainian crew members.
