Parliamentarians from NATO member and partner countries and Ukraine discussed ways of strengthening ties and co-operation at a meeting held at NATO Headquarters from 3-4 March 2003.
The meeting of the Joint Monitoring Group, which brings together representatives of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and the Ukrainian Rada (Parliament), focused on the implementation of the NATO-Ukraine Action Plan.
The Action Plan was adopted at the November 2002 NATO Summit in Prague and provides a framework for intensified consultations and cooperation on political, economic, military and defence matters. It was developed following NATO’s decision in May 2002 to deepen and broaden the Alliance’s partnership with Ukraine.
During the meeting, the parliamentarians were briefed on key aspects of the Action Plan by senior NATO officials and discussed ways in which parliamentarians could assist in its implementation, and in bringing Ukraine closer to NATO.
The Joint Monitoring Group was established in 1998 by the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, following the adoption of the NATO-Ukraine Charter. Its aim is to strengthen the parliamentary dimension of the NATO-Ukrainian relationship.
