NATO's largest annual anti-submarine warfare exercise started in the Ionian Sea on 20 February. Ten NATO countries are providing submarines, maritime patrol aircraft, surface ships and personnel for Dogfish 2003.
The aim of this exercise is to maintain expertise in coordinated anti-submarine, anti-surface and coastal surveillance operations using a multinational force of ships, submarines and aircraft. From 20 February to 5 March, over 130 day and night air/sea missions are planned.
The exercise is being controlled from the co-located multinational NATO HQ of the Commander Submarines, Allied Naval Forces South and the Commander Maritime Air, Allied Naval Forces South, Naples, Italy. Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States are the participating countries.
